Volunteering is more than just an act of kindness; it’s a commitment to making a difference. This year, Susan Hutchinson, an Escrow Officer who works in Sunbelt’s Lake Mary office, pledged to a close friend to complete four volunteer shifts, a promise that she intends to keep and confirm at the year’s end. It’s a small but significant way to ensure accountability and maintain the spirit of giving. Susan’s current organization of choice is the Second Harvest Food Bank, based in Central FL.

Flexibility is important for Susan as it helps balance her desire to help with her career responsibilities. While having volunteered at various places, Second Harvest aligns perfectly with her busy schedule, allowing more contributions during Sunbelt’s off-seasons and stepping back when work gets busy.

When questioned about the significance of serving her local community, Susan says, “‘Noblesse Oblige.…’ a French expression that amounts to upon whom much is conferred, much is expected. In essence, it’s gratitude for the good life I have been given and a sense of gratefulness in that, I owe it to others to pay that forward.”

Volunteering is also my way of paying it forward, a physical expression of my appreciation for all we have been given. It’s a reminder that with great privilege comes the duty to contribute positively to the world around us. In essence, volunteering is an opportunity to connect, learn, and grow while supporting causes that resonate with your life and beliefs.

As Susan looks forward to fulfilling her commitment this year, we invite you to consider how you can make a difference through the simple yet profound act of volunteering.
